Caramels schmaramels. That’s a tough one to chew. Au contraire, the caramels that Becky sent me from her Becky’s Blissful Bakery in Pewaukee (rhymes with Milwaukee?), Wisconsin, were not.
A small gathering of jaded foodies tasted and loved Becky’s wax paper-wrapped, 100% organic caramels in sea salt, cashew, sangria, chai tea, espresso dark chocolate among other flavors.
Good Food Factor
Ingredients and sourcing: Most impressively, the caramels have a firm then very traditionally chewy texture yet do not use corn syrup. For flavors on which Becky collaborated with local food producers, the package features the actual logos of the ingredients providers, which makes the experience even more fun. Fine espresso from Wisconsin’s Stone Creek Coffee speckles the Espresso Dark Chocolate caramel along with a chunk of dark chocolate in the middle. Chai Tea features Rishi Organic Tea, made in Milwaukee. And of course the Salted Beer & Pretzel Caramel blends in a Wisconsin beer from Lakefront Brewery.
Pricing: At about $10.49 a 4-oz box, the caramels push the high end. Yet packaged in a nice simple gift box, and based on the organic ingredients, deliciousness and use of local ingredients, they’re well worth the price. All the tasters raved unanimously, a perfect flavor balance. The sangria had the most room for improvement, with the flavors being hard to detect. But it didn’t stop us.
