Everyone’s wondering what can replace the super-wide plastic straws.
The movement to ban the ever-present plastic straw and for companies to opt-out of plastic straws proactively is taking hold. Visuals of straw litter hurting animals tell the story why.
Eater even dubbed straw bans 2018’s biggest cause.
Surely paper straws do not go hand in hand with boba tea’s tapioca-ball sucking and chewing experience. Plus, available paper straws are not perfect for what boba tea cafe owners need…not to mention the big shortage.
It’s actually fascinating that this one element of a drink business can pose such a challenge. See: Seattle plastic straw ban a piercing problem for bubble tea shops.
Could tea shops and other drink bars go for steel straws which are dishwasher safe yet seemingly get gunk stuck in them (based on the fact that many come with their own tiny brushes)? After all, yerba mate is all about the steel straw, as any Mozart in the Jungle fan knows. (Amazon actually has steel boba straws.)
Loliware, that rad company that makes edible dishware, came to mind.
An Ice Cream Cone for Drinks — Fund the Sustainable Straw of the Future!
Loliware was so far ahead of me—and you can soon try “the world’s first edible, hypercompostable, marinedegradable straw aimed at replacing plastic straws” thanks to an Indigogo campaign that was 164% funded as of January 2018.
They still need funding. You’ll have a chance to try their new innovation early on.
What will be better than eating a tea flavored straw in the process? It’ll be the ice cream cone for drinks.
