ABOUT THE SYLVIA CENTER
The Sylvia Center (TSC) seeks a seasoned gardener and educator with passion and vision, as well as the ability to drive a tractor and use a scuffle hoe. Reporting to The Sylvia Center’s Executive Director and working closely with the Education Director for The Sylvia Center in New York City, the Education Director and Garden Manager for TSC at Katchkie Farm conceives, develops, and implements an effective teaching program that supports The Sylvia Center’s mission: to increase access to healthy eating habits through engaging children in experiences related to growing and cooking fresh food on the farm.
The Director/Manager oversees all aspects of the Center’s one-acre, organic garden and the educational outreach and programming associated with it. Collaborating with the Farm Manager of Katchkie Farm, s/he ensures that the garden and farm function as a resource for young people from New York City, Columbia County and its surrounding areas. The Director/Manager oversees and directs the Center’s garden and culinary interns, and is part of the larger Sylvia Center team comprised of full and part-time staff in New York City.
[Katchkie Farm is located in Columbia County, just 2 hours north of New York City, in the center of New York City’s food shed. The farm is owned by and provides food for Great Performances, one of the largest catering companies in New York City. Katchkie Farm has over twelve acres of land in cultivation and over 9,000 square feet of greenhouses.]
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Provide robust leadership and teaching at the The Sylvia Center at Katchkie Farm to ensure it is a vibrant, successful educational space.
- Manage garden through planning, propagation, planting, cultivation, composting, and maintenance including creation and care of special projects, ensuring that it is a lush, inspiring space reflecting the larger farm.
- Manage propagation and greenhouse work as it relates to the educational garden. Manage soil fertility, composting, crop rotation, garden planning, pruning, irrigation, pest and disease management.
- Develop and implement rigorous and meaningful educational program for farm visits. Research and recruit groups especially in need of program and with whom partnering will advance TSC mission. Teach classes on and offsite. Develop lesson plans.
- Organize and implement local farmer’s markets and other income-producing projects for Center.
- Mentor and manage the culinary and garden interns including their training, education, and projects.
- Maintain excellent communications with Farm Manager and staff.
- Document activities as useful for disseminating knowledge and gathering metrics.
- Develop and monitor appropriate budgets as needed.
- Through research and practice, understand and implement best practices in pedagogy relating to healthy eating practices for children. Participate in relevant conferences and encourage dialogue.
- Contribute to the writing of TSC materials, including but not limited to the blog and website.
- Assist with the cultivation of Board members as appropriate.
- Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- 3-5 years experience managing a farm or educational garden.
- Minimum 2 years teaching experience.
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Advanced degree in agriculture or education a plus.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- A passion and commitment to food education for children and the importance of its role in their lives.
- Demonstrated advanced knowledge of organic agriculture.
- Demonstrated knowledge of food seasonality and food preparation.
- Experience caring for small livestock.
- Proven ability to operate small farm equipment and tools.
- Proven ability to organize and inspire complex groups of people and achieve outstanding results.
- Ability to prioritize and balance multiple tasks and projects.
- Proven ability to work independently but collaboratively.
- Ability to make informed decisions, together with strong analytic and strategic planning skills.
- Proven ability to problem solve, be detail oriented and well organized.
- Proven ability to innovate and bring a level of creativity to your work.
- Sense of humor a plus.
